AI for the study of Environmental Risks (AI4ER)

UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training

We understand that applying to Cambridge, and to the programme, can be confusing. We hope the following answers to common questions will help.

Q. Am I eligible to apply?

Due to the high number of applications we receive, we are unable to give advice on specific queries relating to eligibility, but please refer to our who we are looking for page as this explains the academic and skills requirements.

Q. Do I need to identify a supervisor at the application stage?

There is no requirement to identify a supervisor at the point of applying. If however you are interested in the work being done by a Cambridge PI you are welcome to reference this in your application as this will allow us to see where your interests lie, and how they fit with the programme.

Q. Can I still apply if I haven't yet taken an English test?

Yes, you can. The application form allows you to indicate that you will take a test and provide the results as soon as they are available.

Q. What funding am I eligible for from the AI4ER programme?

We know that this is the biggest question for applicants. The UKRI clarifies what we are able to offer, so you are welcome to refer to their site. We have however summarised this information on the funding eligibility page.

Q. How do I complete the funding section on the application form?

If you require any funding to support your studies, you should answer Yes to the question 'Do you wish to apply for funding?'. You will also be automatically considered for programme funding by selecting Yes to this question (UK and EU applicants only).

If you require additional funds because you are an EU or Overseas applicant, you should also answer Yes to the questions 'Do you wish to be considered for awards offered by the Cambridge Trust?' and 'Do you wish to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship?' Please note the deadlines for Gates as there are two stages, one for US citizens based in the US, and the second for all other non-UK citizens.

You must follow the application process for Gates and the Cambridge Trust and please make sure you refer to the relevant websites to clarify the format and content of the personal statement. To state that you require funding because you have none will not be successful. The funding bodies need to know why you, out of the many hundreds of applicants, deserve funding.

Q. Do I need to provide a research proposal?

You will not be required to provide a research proposal as AI4ER is an MRes+PhD programme.
